iPad Projects: Getting Started With The iPad For Classroom Projects

iPad Projects: Getting Started With The iPad For Classroom Projects

This is an overview of some best practices for using iPad apps in the classroom and some sample apps to get you started with your project ideas. This document will be updated as we discuss each topic.

I have included Helen Kelley’s classroom link which includes examples of group and individual projects using a variety of apps.

iPad Basic Operations:
  • Rebooting-Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Drag the slider to turn your device completely off. After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.
  • Volume-On the side of the iPad is a rocker switch for volume up or down to mute.
  • Taking Pictures & Videos-The camera log app for photos or videos. Also view the photos/videos app for the library of images and videos.

Questions For Structuring Your Projects With iPads:
  • Consider the final project & student outcome.
  • How will the project be managed:
  • Photos will be saved to?
  • Documents can be created with?
  • Presentations can be created with?
  • Student audio and video can be edited with?

Know Your Students Skill Level:
Take all or part of one lesson just to explore a specific app and user interface.

Tips In The Beginning:
  • Only Use One App...Keep it simple.
  • Move from using one app to using the same app in a different way.
  • When combing apps think about the product each app creates and how they can be scaffolded.
  • Think sequentially about the steps for the students with the technology and the anticipated learning outcomes.
